A McKinney family is devastated after an accident that left two family members dead.

David B. Edmundson, 69, and his 9-year-old grandson, Noah Pell, were found dead in the waters at Lake Lavon Saturday around 1 p.m.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden, Capt. Garry Collins, a fisherman saw a young boy floating in the water with a life jacket on. The fisherman called authorities who later began a search. The body of Edmundson was found , with a life jacket on, about 150 yards from the boy's. Edmundson's boat was also found, upside down and tangled in a group of trees.

"It's very strange. In the 28 years as a game warden, we've never recovered anyone wearing a life jacket that has drowned," said Collins.

Collins said with no witnesses, they may never know what really happened that day or how the boat ended up flipped over.

"It somehow turned over. Whether it was because of the rough waters on Saturday or if they hit something underneath the water, we just don't know," Collins said.

Winds gusted up to 30 mph that day, which can be dangerous for boaters and cause choppy waters. Collins said the water at the lake was 50 degrees.

Neighbors who live on Endmundson's close-knit McKinney street were shocked and deeply saddened by the news.

"It's just really devastating to hear that they lost two familiy members," said Susan Peppler, who lives a few doors down the Edmundson's.

Neighbors said the Endmundson family always participated in neighborhood parties and were a giving and kind family.

One neighbor burst into tears at the mention of the tragedy.

"Everybody on the street was crying and praying for the family. A lot of people came out of their homes to give them hugs and comfort them," said Peppler.

The cause of their deaths is still under investigation by the Collin County medical examiner.
