The Fort Worth Zoo is celebrating its 100th birthday by flashing back through the past ten decades within the next ten weeks.

The zoo opened in 1909 with just a hand full of animals, including just one lion, two bears and a few rabbits and has grown into a nationally ranked facility that houses nearly 5,000 native and exotic animals.

The celebration kicked off Thursday and will continue through Sept. 24, focusing on a specific decade each week.

The 100th birthday celebration will feature keeper chats, animal enrichment activities throughout the park and Wild Wonders stage shows at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., zoo officials said.

The aim is to teach visitors all about the Zoo's 100-year history, and past and present residents from around the world.
