I live in Duncanville and know these intersections well. I see the lights flash EVERYDAY, even when, not a SINGLE car is moving. I also question the timing of the signals. How many accidents are the lights actually responsible for because they confuse drivers. The left turn signal at Cockrell Hill and Wheatland gives a green left arrow, turns red for a few seconds, turns green again and almost immediately red again. There is not enough time to accellerate throught the intersection on the second arrow without getting flashed by the red light camera, even if you are the only car turning. To make it, you have to speed through it. THAT IS NOT SAFE. Okay, maybel they help stop accidents, but from the ones I've observed in Duncanville, I am AMAZED at ever turn of the light that they didn't cause an accident. I am also surprised that the signals at Cockerell Hill and 67 were not number 1 and 2. If you approach the intersection there, and STOP one inch over the line, the camera flashes. I don't mean the line that goes into the intersection. They have several lines that go back about 5' to 6' and if you cross the 1st one approaching it goes off. No I have not received tickets in these situations, but I have observed these situations over and over on a daily basis. There is something wrong. Not to mention that Duncanville is probably the smallest geographical suburb in the DFW area. If it's not about money, why does such a small town collect the most money? There's only about 4 intersections that have cameras. Both sides of 67 and Cockerill Hill, both sides of 67 and Danieldale, Cockrell Hill and Wheatland, and Cedar Ridge and Wheatland. That covers halft the town. Go figure. I don't favor manipulation of saying it's to save lives only. A lot of things meant for good are often misused under the disguise of saying it is for the better. If you have never taken time to actually see some of the cameras in operation in Duncanville, and think it's all about good, then you are speaking from a disadvantage of not really knowing what you are talking about. JUST LOOK for yourself, then speak. I've seen hard brakes, where people have almost gotten rear ended, by someone trying to avoid getting caught by the yellow light. I've been through intersections in other cities and non of them require the attention to strategy to get through a green light in Duncanville without the threat of getting a ticket. It's like a speed trap, only it's a red light trap that very obviously appears to be in favor of revenue as opposed to safety. You don't have to take my word for it, just LOOK for yourself. Those lights flash the intersection quite often, without a single car in the actual intersection. One day at 67 and Cockrell hill, I watched the camera flash every car during the time I was stopped at the light. Those were not people breaking the law. The camera was obviously malfunctioning. Any city dumb enough to manipulate their signals outside the standards is subject to fines and loss of state or federal traffic improvement funding. Furthermore, half of all the monies generated by photo enforcement cameras must go to regional trauma centers, like Parkland and JPS.
