A pack of dogs mauled a Dallas woman walking by her friend's house Friday morning in Oak Cliff.

The owner of the five dogs that attacked his friend says he's sorry.

H.J. Whitmill described the scene in the 2100 block of Lamont Avenue as a melee as he tried to pull the pack of dogs off his friend Erica Johnson.

He said the dogs jumped the fence.

"I jumped the fence too, to get to her, but they were already on her," Whitmill said.  He suffered injuries as he tried to pull the dogs off.

Emergency responders took both Johnson and Whitmill to Methodist Hospital.  Whitmill was released, and as of Friday evening, Johnson remained at Methodist listed in fair condition.

"I was the wildest thing I ever seen, but I told her not to agitate those dogs," Whitmill said.

Dallas Animal Services impounded the five dogs involved in the attack. Later in the day, Animal Services cited Whitmill for a series of violations for the numerous dogs that remained.

"We have a whole set of problems here, dogs tethered, no vaccinations and none of the dogs appear to be spayed or neutered," said Animal Services spokesman Kent Robertson.

Whitmill did agree to give up the rest of his dogs.

Jonnie England, a long time animal activist in Dallas, is working with numerous animal rescue organizations to try and find the dogs a home.

"I think someone will step up and take these animals, we are working very hard to get that done," England said.
