Bored Kids on Spring Break Likely Vandalized Cars: Cops

Vandals leave weapon of choice at crime scenes

Police say kids with cabin fever may be responsible for nearly a dozen cases of vandalism in Denton.

Denton police said the vandals were probably speeding as they tossed brick pave stones at vehicles in the Wheeler Ridge neighborhood.

Investigators said they suspect bored kids may be behind the incidents.

"Not that it is kids, but usually they don't have anything better to do," Officer Ryan Grelle said. "We see a little bit of peak of crime during spring break like this."

Sandy Allen said her husband noticed damage to their car early Wednesday morning.

"He came out like at 4 in the morning, and he was going to go to work, and he noticed his window was shattered," she said.

She said they found a brick lying next to their van.

"It's sad," she said. "I mean it's sad that you can't leave your vehicle out without it getting messed up."

Twenty-four hours and $750 later, her husband's work van was back to normal, but other people in the neighborhood were not as lucky. Several vehicles still had their windshields busted out and side panels chipped and damaged Thursday.

Police said they are hoping someone will come forward with information.

"That's what we're hoping, someone has heard something about it," Grelle said. "Usually if it's a bunch of kids, at some point they end up telling people."

Allen said the vandals should think about the consequences of their actions.

"They need to think before they act," she said. "They're costing people money."

Because more than $500 worth of damage was done to many of the vehicles, the vandals could face Class B misdemeanor charges that are punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.
