A 7-month-old girl died Friday after her mother left her inside a vehicle parked outside Bowie Elementary School, Corsicana police said.
The mother, a 23-year-old teacher’s aide, arrived at work shortly after 8 a.m. and didn’t realize the baby was in the car until she called the baby sitter at about 1:20 p.m., Police Chief Randy Bratton said.
That's when she ran outside the classroom to her car and found the infant, Bratton told the Corsicana Daily Sun.
The first police officer who responded performed CPR on the baby until an ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital.
Police are investigating the baby's death and an autopsy has been ordered. They said the case will be referred to a grand jury.
