Child Protective Services is investigating a Denton day care where a 4-month-old girl died Wednesday.
A worker at Too Kool for School, an in-home facility, found 4-month-old Sophia Worsham limp and unresponsive Wednesday and called 911.
The day care is licensed to care for 12 children. The facility reports having 17 children at the time of the baby's death, but CPS investigators said the day care had 30 children.
"We still need to gather some more information," CPS spokeswoman Marissa Gonzales said. "We need to find out how the operation was being run, what their routine was, what was going on the day the incident took place so it will be a safe place for children in the future."
Sabra Conn, who takes her daughter to the home, said CPS has the numbers wrong.
"There were not 30 children," she said. "There were not 30 children at this house. They're very loving people and at all times, there are three to four teachers with our kids."
CPS investigators said an explanation for the discrepancy in the numbers may lie in another nearby day care.
"Licensing also heard this operation may have been shuffling kids back and forth with another operation, and we're certainly looking into that as well," Gonzales said.
The daughter of the day care owner told reporters 17 children were at the facility at the time of Sophia's death. She said the children were safe because four teachers were supervising them.
An autopsy on Sophia's body is being performed in Tarrant County. The baby's father said his daughter was healthy.
Police reports indicate Sophia may have been given medication by her parents on Wednesday, but it was not immediately clear if it could have contributed to her death. Toxicology reports may not be available for weeks.
Denton police have not filed any charges against the day care operator.
"Right now we have no pending charges -- criminal charges -- unless the autopsy shows something neglectful," Denton police spokesman Officer Ryan Grelle said.
