Woman Claims to be Abandoned Baby's Mom

Baby abandoned in apartment complex hallway

A woman has come forward claiming to be the mother of a newborn girl abandoned in the hallway of a Dallas apartment complex.

A resident found the baby wrapped in a blanket last Wednesday evening at the Cambridge Apartments in the 5900 block of East Northwest Highway, a Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman said.

After paramedics evaluated the baby’s condition, they clamped and cut her still attached umbilical cord and transported her to Parkland Memorial Hospital. The baby, who caseworkers are calling Bella, has been released from the hospital and placed in foster care.

DNA tests are being conducted to verify the woman's claims, Child Protective Services spokeswoman Marissa Gonzales said.

“We are working with her as though she is the mother,” Gonzales told the Dallas Morning News. “According to her, she has family members who are interested in caring for the child.”

Gonzales told the newspaper that the woman is believed to be in her 30s, and said a man has also come forward claiming to be the child's father.

There was no word on why the baby was left in the hallway.

The abandonment case doesn't fall under the Texas Baby Moses Law.  However, at this point, no one has been arrested in connection with the incident, the Dallas Police Department said.
