University Park is the latest city in North Texas to ban smoking in public places.

The ban, approved by the city council Tuesday night, is effective immediately with the only exception being for those who smoke on patios of public buildings.

There is also an exemption for retail tobacco stores with special ventilation systems.

Violators could be handed a $500 fine.
