Teenage Artist Uses Art to Fight Leukemia

When Jocelyne Garcia was 12-years-old, she fought leukemia.

She lost mobility in her hands during chemotherapy, so she started drawing to get it back.

“It helped me regain strength in my hands,” said Garcia.

Now 19 and in remission, she continues to draw and paint. And her passion for art helped her face something she couldn't when she was 12.

Garcia said she had forgotten a lot of what happened during her cancer fight.

“I blocked it off for the longest time. I couldn’t remember it. Then one day, I just I wanted to know what happened,” she added.

Her work shows the release of her emotions. And she found herself centering in on things, like hair that she lost.

“I guess with my art, I tend to glorify something that is so horrible,” said Garcia.

With her art, Jocelyne is giving back.

Three of her pictures will be auctioned off to benefit the Children’s Medical Center Research Institute, at a benefit arranged by Doyle Glass.

He has purchased or arranged for all of the art to be donated.

Glass said the reason he organized this event is personal. His wife died in December from breast cancer.

“Because of cancer attacking my family, my loved ones, I’m attacking cancer,” said Glass.

His foundation will also match the money raised.

The auction is on May 8, but you can bid online, too.
