Protect Yourself From West Nile Virus This Holiday Weekend

North Texans are being urged this weekend to take extra precautions to guard against West Nile virus.

“Wear your repellent," said Municipal Mosquito’s Patrick Prather. “Everybody’s outside, everyone’s enjoying parties, everyone’s enjoying barbecues and fireworks."

After a wet spring followed by hot, dry summer conditions, the number of mosquitoes testing positive in North Texas for West Nile is rising.

“This is shaping up to be a banner year for West Nile,” said Prather. “We’re seeing far more positive samples.”

Mosquitoes caught in two traps set in Haslet tested positive for West Nile this week, raising concern among parents Friday night at the city’s 15th Annual Independence Day Celebration.

“Concerned enough to buy spray and spray my kids down,” said Cassie Stevens of Fort Worth. “And make sure I’m sprayed down every time we’re outside."

“We sprayed all the kids, made sure that everybody’s covered,” said Cherene Donaldson of Haslet.

Fog trucks were scheduled to spray for mosquitoes following Friday night’s fireworks.

“This weekend is going to be exceptionally busy,” Prather said. "We had fog trucks in, I believe, 18 different locations last night and tonight we will be in, I believe, 20 different locations."
