Plano Man Rescued from Hiking Trail in Maine

A Texas man was taken to a Maine hospital after suffering a broken ankle while hiking the Appalachian Trail.

The Maine Warden Service says it responded to a section of the trail in northwestern Maine at about noon Wednesday and took about four hours to remove 69-year-old Charles Smith, of Plano, Texas. He had left Andover earlier in the day and was hiking a section of the trail near the intersection of the Bemis Trail Track in Rangeley Plantation.

Wardens say Smith was descending Bemis Mountain when he fell.

Smith initially was taken to Rumford Hospital but was transferred to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
