Ninth Flu-Related Death Confirmed in Denton County

Health officials in Denton County confirmed Friday the ninth flu-related death in the county this season.

County health officials aren't saying much about the patient, other than that it was a child.  The county has recorded nine influenza-related deaths including two children and seven adults.

Prior to the most recent death,  the last known flu-related death in the county was recorded last week; the patient was a woman in her 40s with underlying health conditions who had not been vaccinated.

Only one of the seven patients with a known vaccine history had received the vaccine this season.

The county received 21 positive influenza tests and three hospitalizations for flu between Feb. 9-15.  Those numbers indicate a decline in the percentage of positive tests, total number of positive tests and the number of tests performed weekly, the county said.

As of this writing, there have been 78 flu-related deaths in North Texas including 47 in Dallas County, 10 in Tarrant County, nine in Denton County, nine in Collin County, and one each in Hunt, Hood and Wise counties.
