Mesquite Joins 51 Texas Cities in Becoming Smoke-Free

The Mesquite City Council passed an ordinance limiting smoking, joining 51 Texas cities that have done the same

Mesquite joined 51 Texas cities in becoming a “comprehensive smoke-free city” Monday night.

The Mesquite City Council passed an ordinance that prohibits smoking in “all indoor places of employment.” Effective immediately, the new policy will ban smoking in many public places as well.

According to the ordinance, it will be illegal to smoke in airports, bars, classrooms, grocery stores, hotels, playgrounds, and restroom facilities, just to name a few.

The Mesquite City Council said they also hope to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure in the workplace and beyond.

Almost every major city in Texas has become comprehensively smoke-free. Fort Worth, however, is one city that still hasn’t passed a nonsmoking ordinance.

Smoke Free Texas is hoping for Fort Worth to become the next smoke free city. Billy Bob’s, the world’s largest honky tonk, located in the heart of Cowtown, banned smoking after customers demanded the change.

According to the American Nonsmokers Rights Foundation, 32 states are smoke free in non-hospitality workplaces. Texas is not one of them, but Smoke Free Texas is fighting for the Lone Star State to limit the smoke and change the future. For now, Mesquite is contributing to that change.
