Fighting Disease With Innovation

If you've used social media at any point in the past year, you've probably seen videos of people dumping buckets of ice-cold water over their heads.

No, your friends weren't crazy. They were raising awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS.

The disease slowly robs its victims of their physical abilities, all while keeping the mind intact. There is no treatment or cure, but researchers are giving hope for patients to live more productive lives.

Tony Zarvou, the Chief Operating Officer of Wilson McClain Plumbing, has ALS — but you wouldn't know at first glance. Tony is a fully-functioning CEO. He's taken a communication device and modified it to allow him to do things that many with advanced stage ALS couldn't.

The device tracks his eye movement, allowing him to type on his computer. Tony can run anything from the television in his home, to the payroll for his company.

The company behind the software that gives Tony this ability is so impressed with what he has done, they are looking into further software improvements across a broad range of systems.

An ALS research fundraiser golf tournament is scheduled in Frisco Oct. 1. Click here to read more about how you can donate or participate in the seventh annual Tee Up to Cure ALS tournament.
