Wastewater Spills Onto Carrollton Streets

An estimated 300,000 gallons of wastewater was released onto Carrollton streets in the span of over a week, city officials said in a statement Saturday.

Recent flooding overwhelmed a water treatment plant used by the city of Carrollton. Wastewater was subsequently released onto city streets over a period beginning Friday, May 29 and ending the morning of Saturday, June 6, the statement said.

An estimated 201,600 gallons was spilled into the 1100 block of Interstate 35 E near Hutton Branch. An additional 100,800 gallons was spilled in the 2200 block of Hutton Drive in Carrollton, according to city officials. The wastewater was a mix of rainwater and domestic waste.

"Due to the recent flooding the City of Carrollton's contract wastewater treatment facilities were inundated with large volumes of water," said Brian Little, Carrollton's Water Utilities Manager.

"This event caused the wastewater collection system to back up resulting in the release of wastewater out of the manholes. Appropriate local government officials and City Council were notified and updated during these events."

City crews began cleaning up and disinfecting the areas around the spills on Friday after the water treatment plant began keeping up with wastewater intake.

The spills caused no environmental impact, according to officials.
