El Paso Rolls Out Bicycle Sharing Program

A West Texas city has rolled out its bicycle sharing system.

El Paso's B-Cycle program began Wednesday. The pay-to-ride project, called SunCycle, includes 80 bicycles at eight solar-powered sites in the downtown and University of Texas-El Paso areas.

The $720,000 system is part of the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority, with local and state financial support.

Backers say bicycle sharing is affordable, clean and simple, providing a way to get around that's good for a rider's health and the environment.

The program relies on computer technology to track riders and bicycles, which can be picked up and dropped off at any B-Cycle station.

Usage charges are based on length of ride, usually in 30-minute increments. A membership fee provides unlimited access to the bicycles for up to a year.
