Case of Measles Reported in Plano ISD

A case of measles has been confirmed at A.R. Schell Jr. Elementary School in Richardson.

The student at Schell Elementary was suspected to have measles on Jan. 6, and was excluded from school, according to Dr. Jawaid Asghar, chief epidemologist for Collin County Health Services.

The student was allowed to go back to school on Jan. 11, and a positive lab result for measles was received on Jan. 12.

Lesley Range-Stanton, spokeswoman for the Plano Independent School District, told NBC 5 the school was deep cleaned after the district learned of the case, and all protocols and recommendations from the Collin County health department were followed.

Plano ISD says an elementary student had a confirmed case of the measles earlier this month.

Symptoms of the measles include rash, fever, cough and runny nose.

The student recently traveled to a foreign country and was not vaccinated, according to Dr. Jawaid Asghar, chief epidemiologist at Collin County Health Care Services.

A letter from Collin County Health Services that was released to parents and posted on the school district's website indicates anyone at the school on Jan. 5 could have been exposed to the measles case.
