Red Vines Licorice Recalled for Lead

Stay away from a certain type of Red Vines licorice. That's what Dr. Ron Chapman, director o fthe California Department of Public Health said, Wednesday.

Stay away from a certain type of Red Vines licorice. That's what Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health said, Wednesday.

In a press release, the Doctor warned that Red Vines Black Licorice Twists ("Best Before" 020413) have tested high in lead levels. Higher than the state's standards.

The candy is sold in one-pound packages that is light red with the Red Vines name in bold white letters. The black licorice can be seen through the package. The words "Black Licorice Twists" appear toward the bottom of the package.

The candy is manufactured and distributed by American Licorice CO., in Union City, CA.

The company has initiated a voluntary recall of the affected product.

If you have the candy, throw it away immediately.  Pregnant women and children who may have consumed the candy should see a doctor.

Consumers who find this candy for sale should call the CDPH Complaint Hotline at 1 800-495-3232. For more information about lead poisoning, contact your county childhood lead poisoning prevention program or public health department.
