Allergy Season in Full Swing in North Texas

Mountain cedar season is driving allergy sufferers to doctor’s offices and drug stores.

“Itchy eyes, burning eyes, nose congestion 24/7. You just can’t get it out, you’re just constantly draining through your throat, nose is stuffy,” said Michelle Shook of Allen, who stocked up on over-the-counter allergy medications during her lunch hour.

Allergies have gotten much worse over the past two years in North Texas, caused by a combination of weather conditions that make allergy sufferers’ eyes water.

“If you had some pollen glitter and you sprinkle that on yourself when you come inside you would be all covered like an evening gown on you,” said Dr. Aasia Ghazi of Allergy & Asthma Specialists in Dallas. “That’s how much pollen you accumulate on you when you’re outdoors.”

“The temperatures are going to be high today and tomorrow and then they will boom down, fluctuate down again on Thursday and that might cause a problem, and the wind,” said Ghazi.

Over-the-counter medications can help, but getting rid of the pollen altogether is the best medicine.

“So when you come indoors, first thing to do is to take a shower, take your clothes off and remove them,” said Ghazi.

Ghazi also recommends wearing a mask over your nose and mouth if you’re working outside and wearing sunglasses to help your eyes.

Nasal rinses are also good to help get you through the allergy season.
