Local and federal authorities are teaming up Saturday out of concern about the growing misuse of prescription drugs, especially among kids 12 to 17 years old.

Police departments and other agencies across the country are joining the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration today to collect unused, expired and unwanted prescription drugs that will later be destroyed.

More than 30 police and sheriff's departments in North Texas are drug collection sites.

The city of Plano is hosting five collection sites as well:

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 25, 2010:
Plano East Senior High School - 3000 Los Rios Blvd.
Plano Senior High School - 2200 Independence Pkwy.
Clark High School - 523 Spring Creek Pkwy.
Plano West Senior High School - 5601 W. Parker Rd.
Baylor Hospital Plano - 4700 Alliance Blvd.

  • The program is free and anonymous.
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications will be accepted.
  • Intra-venous solutions, injectables, inhalers and needles will not be accepted.
  • Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamines are not part of this initiative.
