Uber Drivers Demand Change Over New Company Policy

For a second straight night, hundreds of Uber drivers refused to pick up customers in protest of a new company policy.

David Saloha has been an Uber driver for more than three years, and for a long time, he's enjoyed providing their Black level service.

"The system is addictive. You're always looking for a challenge, you meet new people, interesting people," said Saloha.

Saloha's joined a growing number of drivers unhappy with a new Uber policy, which has Uber Black and SUV drivers picking up cheaper fares from uberX customers.

Saloha said he'll lose money making the extra trips because the cheaper fares won't cover his gas, maintenance, and tolls after Uber get's its cut of the bill.

"But now they definitely broke the camel's back," Saloha said. "We cannot afford to drive our cars for that kind of price."

He's not the only one concerned.

Shannon Booth, an uberX driver, said she's worried customers will pass her car for a chance to ride in luxury.

"I worked the ball game last night in Arlington," said Booth. "The only people I saw picking up riders were Uber black."

Uber released the following statement Friday afternoon:

Drivers are our customers, and our goal is to give them the best Uber experience and maximize their ability to earn money. Drivers make more money by completing more trips. With uberX demand skyrocketing, we launched a new program that allows drivers to receive more trip requests from riders at multiple price points.

We are committed to the profitability of our driver-partnersโ€™ businesses. We will continue to hold driver office hours every day to address concerns and ensure our partners are getting the most out of the Uber app.

The Uber app has many different price point options for consumers, and uberX driver-partners have been able to accept a variety of requests based on their type of vehicle for quite some time. For example, a driver with an SUV can receive requests for both uberX and uberXL trips.

Uber users are concerned the change could impact service, but Uber say it will not.

Uber drivers tell NBCDFW they plan to stage another rally on Monday, and will continue to protest until Uber makes changes.
