Union sources say executives have made direct overtures

Executives at US Airways have contacted union leaders at American Airlines in an attempt to win support for a possible takeover bid, NBC 5 has learned.

Union sources told NBC 5 that US Airways executives have made direct overtures to union leaders at Fort Worth-based American.

Sources also told NBC 5 that US Airways' interest in American may become more clear in the next week.

Leaders from all three of American's unions will be at a bankruptcy creditors committee next week.

A US Airways representative declined to comment on the situation Friday night.

Also Friday, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison weighed in on talk of a possible takeover of American Airlines.

She asked other airlines to let American Airlines complete its bankruptcy proceedings before pursuing possible mergers, saying she was concerned "about the potential disruptive effects of such efforts" during the bankruptcy.

American Airlines CEO Tom Horton has said that his goal is to bring American out of bankruptcy as a stand-alone company.
