Redbox Buys Blockbuster Express Kiosks

Blockbuster Express kiosks likely to turn red

The Red vs. Blue kiosk wars will be over by the end of 2012.

Coinstar, which owns the DVD automated kiosk company Redbox, will buy NCR's entertainment division for $100 million.

NCR owns the kiosks that have been branded as Blockbuster Express kiosks and were, at one time, a big part of Blockbuster's plans to return to prominence in the video rental business.

The deal is expected to close around the third quarter of 2012, after which the blue Blockbuster boxes will likely turn into Redbox kiosks.

Redbox also announced a streaming service in partnership with Verizon, to allow streaming content online and accessing a kiosk for a flat fee.

Blockbuster, which was acquired by Dish Network last year, also has a subscription service that allows for streaming content online and access to the content in Blockbuster stores and kiosks.
