Pier 1 Imports Fined Over Alleged Safety Violations

Company says worker safety is "of the utmost importance"

Pier 1 Imports was fined $86,100 by federal inspectors for three “serious” safety violations at the company’s distribution centers in Fort Worth and Mansfield.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said the home furnishing retailer failed to inspect forklifts and provide proper training to operators.

The safety agency launched an investigation after a worker was hospitalized after an accident involving an electric pallet jack.

Pier 1 Imports issued a statement saying the company was cooperating with the investigation.

"The safety of Pier 1 Imports' associates is of the utmost importance," the statement said. "We strive to ensure that our associates have a safe work environment."

OSHA’s area director in Fort Worth said the violations were serious.

“Pier 1 Imports exposed workers to hazardous but preventable conditions and ultimately jeopardized the safety of their workers in doing so,” Jack Recto wrote in a prepared release. "This complaint and report of a hospitalization have identified continual hazards which require immediate corrective action to prevent further injuries."

The alleged violations occured at the company's warehouses at 2200 Heritage Parkway in Mansfield and 14900 Trinity Boulevard in Fort Worth.
