Local Manufacturer Overcoming Nationwide Recall

Redesign of classic window covering gets green light from CPSC

After a nationwide recall on Roman shades last year, a local manufacturer has developed his own solution to make the product safer.

The chord on the back of traditional Roman shades posed a strangulation hazard, so Texton Inc. in Garland redesigned the window coverings to eliminate the chord, replacing it with a wider strap.

The company's owner said safety has always been important, but the new Audra Guard lift system was motivated in part by the birth of his daughter. It was even named after her.

"The life and death of a child rests on the parent, and it just took on a new meaning," Ed Williams said.

The Audra Guard system got the green light from the Consumer Product Safety Commission last week.

The company said it is in talks with a Dallas-based retailer to have it in stores in the coming weeks.
