More Than 1 Million Electric Blower Vacuums Recalled Due to Fire Risk

More than 1,000 reports received of arcing, sparking, smoking in Chinese-made blower vacs

More than 1 million electric blower vacuums made in China are being recalled due to fire and burn hazards, according to The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall involves two models sold under the Homelite and OWT Industries brand names.

Homeline is recalling 823,000 Homeline 12 amp leaf blowers nationwide and another 41,000 in Canada after receiving 1,369 reports of blower vacuums sparking, arcing, smoking or burning, including one report of minor injury.

Recalled Homeline model numbers are UT42120, UT42120A and UT42121. Model numbers are located on a label on the left side of the red motor housing. The blower vacuums are red and black. “Homelite BlowerVac 2 Speed Powerful 220 MPH” is printed on the side of the motor housing and on the black plastic blower tube.

OWT Industries is recalling 225,000 Expert Gardner 12 amp leaf blowers after 16 reports of arcing, smoking or burning. No injuries have been reported.

Recalled OWT model numbers are 20254EG, 20254EGA, 20254EGB, 20254EGBC, 20254EGC and 21254EG. Model numbers are located on a label on the left side of the motor housing. The blower vacuums are green and black. “Expert Gardener” and “Blower Vac 2 Speed Quiet 150 MPH Powerful 220 MPH” are printed on the side of the green motor housing and on the black plastic blower tube.

Homelite's blowers were sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores. OWT Industries' blowers were sold exclusively at U.S. Walmart stores. Customers are advised to return them to the store purchased for a full refund.

Both blowers were manufactured by Changzhou Globe Tools Co. Ltd. and Cixi City Best Power Tools Co., Ltd., of China.
