Two people have been injured after a Union Pacific freight train derailed in Benbrook early Thursday morning.
Union Pacific representative Mark Davis said the two locomotives and seven cars went off the rails and fell on their side while switching from a side track to the main track near Aledo Road, north of Interstate 20 and west of U.S. Highway 377.
One of the injured crew members was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries; the other suffered only minor injuries.
The 46-car train was headed from Tucson, Ariz., to Dallas.
The cars that have tipped over are carrying paper products, according to Benbrook fire crews. Crews are removing diesel fuel from the train's engine.
The train was listed as carrying ammonium nitrate in one of the cars, the same chemical the may have ignited and exploded at a fertilizer plant in the town of West in April. Benbrook Fire Department said there was no ammonium nitrate on the cars that tipped over and that the car listed as carrying the chemical was empty and did not derail.
Benbrook fire crews and the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office are responding. A HAZMAT crew is also on scene to check reports of the chemical being transported.
