Dallas County Reports First Flu-Related Death

An adult with influenza has died in Dallas County, health officials said Monday.

It is the first reported death in the county this flu season. However, adult flu-related deaths are not required to be reported to county health officials.

Dallas County Health and Human Services is not releasing information about the patient for privacy reasons.

Health officials say getting the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent contracting influenza. The vaccine is recommended for everyone except children younger than 6 months old and people with severe egg allergies.

"DCHHS is encouraging Dallas County residents to get the flu vaccine while the supply is plentiful," said Zachary Thompson, director.

Because it takes about two weeks after getting vaccinated for antibodies to develop, health officials say it's important to get a flu shot now.
