DPD Chase Ends at US 175 and Jim Miller Road

Dallas police said a suspect involved in Friday's shootout with officers and chase along US Highway 175 killed himself.  The shootout involved suspect Domingo Soto.

On Saturday evening, police told NBCDFW: "Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that  suspect Soto died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and not rounds fired by the officers involved."

Dallas police said that Garland police officers were in Dallas just before 4:30 p.m. to investigate a murder that happened earlier in Garland. When Garland officers located Soto they called for assistance from Dallas police.

In a Saturday morning news conference, Dallas police identified the responding officers as Dallas officer Matthew Merta and Garland Detective Thomas Olvera.

Dallas officers responded to the area of CF Hawn Freeway and Buckner Boulevard and conducted a felony traffic stop. One man in the truck got out and was arrested by police. While attempting to arrest the suspect, officers said Soto resisted, struggled with officers and reached into his waistband, police said.

Dallas police said that the officers, fearing the man had a gun, shot Soto. He drove a short distance, and the chase ended with a one-car accident. Police said Soto was taken to Baylor Hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

NBC 5's Omar Villafranca spoke to witnesses who described a chaotic, frantic scene. Witnesses said they heard shots fired. Witnesses also said police arrived at the Jim Miller Road exit with guns drawn and dragged someone out of the truck.

Chopper 5 could see a maroon pickup truck had come to a stop after hitting a road sign, the back window had been shot out.

Several police cars and crime scene tape also blocking the intersection at the CF Hawn Freeway frontage road and Buckner Boulevard where the officer-involved shooting took place.

Westbound US 175 was closed at the Jim Miller Road exit while police investigated. Traffic was diverted onto the service road, but became backed up when a horse trailer got stuck in the ditch. The eastbound lanes were also slow because of onlookers.
