Racial Slurs Used to Deface Obama Sign

Now, the homeowners, who recently moved to the neighborhood, are terrified

Vandals defaced a political sign using racial slurs and other derogatory remarks outside a home in the 1400 block of Somerset Drive in McKinney.

Now, the homeowners, who recently moved to the neighborhood, are terrified. "My first reaction was just utter disbelief, that in America, in 2012, that this is happening," said Cassy Zobel.

She was awoken Friday morning by a neighbor holding her Obama sign, looking much different than it did when she had gone to bed the night before. Sometime, during the night, vandals stapled 2 handwritten poster boards on either side of the campaign sign.

On one side, they used a racial slur and made other derogatory comments. On the other side, they touted the Republican ticket as Christian, white and Anti-gay.

Zobel, who just moved into the home in July, is frightened to think that one of their neighbors feels this way. "It breaks my heart for my African-American neighbors and their kids and for my street and my community and my city and my country."

The Zobel’s plan to install security cameras on their home in light of this incident, saying it is not the first time someone has messed with the sign. McKinney police came out and made a report, but said there's not much they can do unless they catch the vandals in the act.
