After receiveing a formal cease and desist letter from Warner Brothers earlier this week, the Texas Theatre has decided to shut down their weekly screenings of the original TV series Dallas. For the past month, the historic movie house has hosted cultish screening parties where guests don costumes, watch two episodes of the show, and break for intermission cocktails in between.
Aviation Cinemas, the team who owns and runs the theatre, has made numerous attempts to reach out to the Warner Brothers marketing department with hopes of partnering with them in order to keep the weekly event alive.
"It deeply saddens us because a whole new audience was starting to discover Dallas," said Eric Steele, one of the partners at Aviation. "The parties were personally some of the most fun nights I've ever had in this city."
The event became so popular that even original stars of the show Larry Hagman (who played J.R. Ewing) and Linda Gray (who played Sue Ellen) showed up at one of the screenings.
Silver lining? There's one more party! Never ones to go out without a bang, the Texas Theatre will throw a farewell Dallas funeral party this Sunday from 8-11 p.m. If ever there was a time to doll up with huge Dallas hair under a ten-gallon cowboy hat, this would be it.
Just because they won't be screening the show doesn't mean there won't be any fun to be had. Says their event page: "We ask that you dress in your most fantastic Dallas attire for the last time as we lick our wounds and drink ourselves stupid."
