Last night, Village Voice threw their 2nd annual food truck event Choice Streets on Pier 86 at the Intrepid. What better way to spend a beautiful spring evening than to get a taste of some of the city's best street eats right next to the famous USS Intrepid.

Here are some highlights:

Red Hook Street Vendors' Solber Pupusas, serving up pupusas, a hot corn tortilla filled with meat (or cheese).

A Bufala slice at Neapolitan Pizza.

Souvlaki GR charcoal grilled chicken with Souvlaki sticks and hand-cut Greek fries.

Chef Samir's lemon chicken couscous at Come Ci Comme Ca.

A delightfully surprising amount of vegetarian options like the veggie flautas.

There was no shortage of dessert trucks, like Wafels & Dinges, serving up hot Belgian waffles.

Attendees feasted while the sun set over Pier 86.

Who said it?

"I'm the product of good English teachers… I got in a lot of trouble [growing up] but always had the ability to use language to my benefit… and make my own world."

Did anyone guess… Anthony Bourdain? If so, then you were probably lucky enough to attend last night's 10th Anniversary benefit for The Bronx Academy of Letters--a night hosted by the former chef himself, with indie mag Lucky Peach at the Metropolitan Pavillion.

It was a night filled with incredible bites from some of the country's powerhouse chefs and restaurants, like Danny Bowien of Mission Chinese, Grabrielle Hamilton from Prune, and NYC favorites Roberta's & BrisketTown. And those who ate, didn't shy away from the palette-pleasing array of cocktails mixed by PDT's Jim Meehan.

Now, a night of food like this would inevitably leave you warm and happy inside, right? But it was ultimately the cause, the speakers and student presentations that brought that feeling to a whole new level.

The Bronx Academy of Letters is an Urban Assembly School, educating students in urban areas by expanding their life experiences through reading, writing, and global awareness and opportunity.

They believe that society's prejudices should not prevent our city's kids from becoming the individuals they have the potential to be. And through real-world exposure and experience and stern academics, these students are taking strides toward success in their own lives, and those around them.

Great cause, great food? We're in!

If there's anything New Yorkers love, it's a reason to eat, drink and celebrate. This weekend, we're celebrating the first leg of the Triple Crown with the Kentucky Derby and topping that off with Cinco de Mayo Sunday Funday to keep the party going (...naturally). Here's a roundup of the best fiestas in town:

If an outdoor terrace is where you want to be, with a cocktail in hand, experience 40 varieties of tequilas and mezcals at Tequila Park Taqueria, newly opened at the Hudson Hotel (356 W 58th St.).

Celebrate the Mexican victory over the French (PS. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day) with capes, luchadors, nachos, and a "Choose Your Own Margarita Adventure" Bar at The Tippler (42 W 15th St.).

Thrillist is throwing its first annual Luncha Libre: The Thrillist Taco Knockout at Villain in Brooklyn. Buy tickets and enjoy taco creations from local chefs and unlimited beer, micheladas and margaritas (50 North 3rd St.).

Care to keep it low key? Check out Jean-Georges Vongerichten's ABC Cocina (opens Thursday 5/2) for the renowned chef's take on Mexican and Latin flavors (38 E 19th St.). Check Open Table for reservations.

One of our favorites, Alex Stupak's Empellon Taqueria is doing a special Cinco de Mayo all-you-can-drink special prix-fixe menu for Saturday dinner, Sunday brunch, and Sunday Dinner, featuring some new dishes… and, we mentioned the unlimited beer, margaritas, and sparking wine, right? Churro French toast, braised bacon tacos, fish tempura tacos.. uh, yes, please. Viva la Mexico!

As I've grown older, I've found that ketchup simply doesn't cut the mustard. I don't want a light garnish to add a comfortable little flavor assist to my fries. I want my eggs to pop. I want to taste my steak long after it's been swallowed. I want to not simply eat my food, but to experience my food. It is this longing that has prompted me to reach for sauces of a spicier variety. Frank's, Sriracha, Tabasco; these hallmarks of the hot sauce hall of fame have all graced my plate. But as any eater who truly appreciates heat knows, there's more out there than just these seasoning stalwarts.

It was these savy spice-lovers who found themselves at the 1st Annual Hot Sauce Expo this past weekend at the Williamsburg Waterfront. With a commitment to curating one-of-a-kind eating events for discerning palates all over the city, Food Karma Projects, Jimmys No. 43, & Underground Eats put together an expo celebrating the finest in chili, pepper, and spice sauces from all over the country.

The two-day event included everything from a Chicken Wing Cook-Off to a Spicy Cookie challenge that left its participants sweating and red faced (in the best kind of way).

But this event wasn't simply an exercise in culinary masochism. The most amazing thing on display (besides the sheer number of hot sauce fans in attendance) was the dynamic range of the different vendors and sauces. Rather than just different riffs on the same similar formula, attendees of the expo could sample sauces where the vendors could literally time, to the second, when the taster would experience the different flavors contained in their products. While some vendors appeared to have their focus on image and flash, the real standouts of the expo let the sauces speak for themselves.

After sampling around, I found myself returning to two vendors; Puckerbutt and Baron's International Kitchen. Baron's, based out of Hudson Valley, won me over with a Caribbean Hot Sauce made with habañero peppers, chili powder, and cucumber for a smooth finish. It was light, bright, and distinct. Puckerbutt offered a variety of sauces, but the one that stood out was the Yellow Fever, which combined seven different kinds of yellow peppers from Africa & South America to create an incredibly unique sauce that tasted unlike anything else at the festival (and which I assume would taste fantastic on seafood). I ended up buying a bottle from both vendors.

If a guest opted for being labeled as a Very Important Person, they were treated to exclusive vendors, liquor samplings, and a good deal of delicious biscuits.

While there was a good deal of tasty tacos, bahn mis, and burgers available at the expo, the best bites were available in the VIP section at the Empire Biscuit booth. Flakey, buttery, and baked to perfection, the samples at this table were the ones that I found myself reaching for throughout the entire day. With a location popping up in an Alphabet City near you, this twenty-four hour Southern biscuit shop is one to watch.

All in all, the 1st Annual Hot Sauce Expo was a spicy success. Although my mouth is still burning, I don't regret sampling any of the sauces on display.  The event organizers put on a fantastic showing, with things like eating competitions, live music, and a fantastic setting that gave me my first sunburn of the season. Keep your appetite underground, and keep your meals hot!

Last night, we ate the night away at the sold-out sixth annual Village Voice Choice Eats tasting event at the 69th Armory in New York City. Over 80 local restaurants were represented (way more than the expected 50!), serving their best bites for the hungry crowd. Here are our highlights of the night:

1. Our friends at Ditch Plains never dissapoint with their famous mac 'n' cheese hot dog, a sure crowd pleaser. It's simply a beef hot dog with a glob of warm mac 'n' cheese right on top.

2. Quite possibly our favorite bite of the night was the hog sandwich from Xe May Sandwich. Slices of perfectly marinated grilled pork were nestled delightfully on a warm, toasty white baguette with fried shallots, pickled carrots, daikon, cucumbers and chili mayo.

3. Literally one bite, Jimmy's No. 43 served a moutful of Southern love, bacon grits.

4. Slow-smoked brisket from Mable's Smokehouse & Banquet Hall had us salivating and melted in our mouths like a perfectly cooked brisket should. It was served with Grandma's collard greens.

5. An LES favorite of ours, Kuma Inn, brought the big guns with a whole pig.

6. Our favorite vegetarian option was Dirt Candy's cherry tomato tart with smoked feta, one bite with big flavor, reminiscent of smoked salmon.

7. The UES was represented with Kaia Wine Bar's chicken wings with a South African twist.

8. Fay Da Bakery provided a quick sweet break with some Asian desserts and bubble tea.

9. A chilled lobster bisque was a nice palette cleanser before moving on for some more serious eating.

10. The longest line in the Armory was by far for Red Hook's lobster rolls.

11. Swine, located in the West Village, served a delightful terrine toast.

12. We kept it classy in the VIP lounge with some Sloppy Joe's.

13. The guys at Porchetta never dissapoint with their signature porchetta, perfectly juicy and freshly carved. If you make friends with them, they'll give you some crispy skin.

14. Simple, yet delectable, Brookly Cured's chicken chorizo sandwich was two bites of yum.

15. The Institute of Culinary Education served a great lamb meatball, definitely not made by amateurs.

16. Chinese Mirch's chicken momo in spiced broth was pleasantly robust with a nice kick at the end, just where we like it... on our taste buds.
