Stewart Takes on U.N. General Assembly

“I love this thing, ‘cause the U.N. is where you get to see countries go insane."

With the United Nations General Assembly in full swing, “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart was eager to see whether this week’s session would deliver any high drama and “red meat rhetoric.”

“I love this thing, ‘cause the U.N. is where you get to see countries go insane,” Stewart said, referring to world leaders' history of dramatic displays before the General Assembly.

Past General Assemblies have bore witness to such performances as late Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev banging his shoe at the podium, and Libyan leader Moammar Khaddafy tossing a copy of the U.N. charter to the floor.

Given the Assembly’s colorful history and the current state of the world, Stewart was gearing up for a showdown with Iran, the U.S. and Israel, which he giddily likened to "World War III."

Only, it wasn’t as dramatic as Stewart had hoped for.

Obama quoted Gandhi and spoke of diplomacy, while Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he believed Muslims, Christians, Jews and other religions “get along comfortably.”

“Isn’t anybody going to give us the red meat rhetoric and innovative prop comedy we’ve come to expect from the United Nations?” demanded an exasperated Stewart.

Israel was next to bat, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not disappoint.

Taking to the podium, Netanyahu attempted to illustrate Iran's nuclear plans by holding up a sketch of what Stewart called a “Wile E. Coyote nuclear bomb."

“You’re really going to pretend that you don’t know what a nuclear bomb looks like?” Stewart goaded. “You’re Israel – run downstairs and look in the basement.”
