2012 Golden Globes Promises Intrigue, Awards and Fashion

The Golden Globes is a unique affair this year, as the most burning question heading into the evening is, How will host Ricky Gervais behave? But that doesn't mean there isn't plenty more reasons to watch, from the red carpet to the final award.

Over the previous two years, Gervais has delivered several incredibly withering shots. Gervais shocked the world in 2010 when he gave a riotous and gutsy turn as the MC, all but guaranteeing that he'd be brought back for a second time. And in 2011, Gervais not only sharpened his wit, he turned it on the assembled stars, spurring outrage and scorn. Now he's back for a third (and final time, he insists), and there's serious disagreement over how he'll comport himself. Either way, you can be sure that, barring an act of god or mid-acceptance speech death, Gervais will remain the No. 1 topic after the show.

The film categories at the Golden Globes appears to be largely wide open, making it tough to predict who will win as there's no juggernaut poised to dominate the evening. Among the TV nominees, we're guessing the evening's big winners will include the mini-series "Mildred Pierce," with "Boardwalk Empire" and "Game of Thrones" battling it out for dramatic series accolades.

And of course there's always the time-honored sport of clothes watching on the red carpet, where The Golden Globes have been steadily approaching the Oscars' status as a high-fashion runway. But don’t worry, there's still no shortage of total disasters to make you feel better about yourself.

The 69th Annual Golden Globes will air live Sunday, January 15th at 8 PM ET on NBC
