Sherwood Schwartz and actress Florence Henderson pose together at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences 2008 Hall of Fame Ceremony in Beverly Hills.

As a writer and a producer, Sherwood Schwartz helped create the stuff of enduring TV legend. The man who brought us the wacky castaways of "Gilligan's Island" and the iconic All-American Brady family died Tuesday at the age of 94.

Schwartz started out as a writer on the '50s sitcom "I Married Joan" and the variety series "The Red Skelton Show" before launching "Gilligan's Island" in 1964. The multi-talented hyphenate also composed music, helping to craft the instantly recognizable themes to "Gilligan's Island," "The Brady Bunch," and the earwormy "It's About Time."

Despite his advancing years, Schwartz remained active until just a few years ago, producing both late '90s "Brady Bunch" movies starring Shelley Long and Gary Cole, and even overseeing "The Real Gilligan's Island" special in 2004.

Schwartz is reported to have died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mildred, and their four children.
