Michael Jackson fans across the globe celebrated the King of Pop's memory Saturday evening, attempting to break the world record for having the most people simultaneously dance to a song at the same time -- Jackson's smash hit "Thriller" -- and to land in the Guinness Book in MJ's honor.

King of Pop die-hards congregated in cities worldwide Saturday to groove to Jackson's 80's Halloween classic as part of the "Thrill the World" dance-a-thon, organized by fan clubs throughout the globe, E! Online reported.

Celebs Miley Cyrus, Mandy Jiroux and Chuck Liddell gathered in Los Angeles with some 6,000 fans to dance it out, while similar parties took place in New York, Washington, D.C. and other hot spots in the United States and abroad.

Some 37 countries participated in the dance-off, held just days before Jackson's film "This Is It" is scheduled to hit theaters.

The current record was set by 13, 597 people just a few months ago in Mexico City, on what would have been Jackson's 51st birthday, E! Online reported.

Numbers are still being crunched on whether Saturday's event beat that tally -- but the worldwide event is expected to crush the Mexico City effort, experts said.
