“Chicago” Set to Become “All That” in Broadway History

“Chicago” is on the verge of becoming the longest-running American show in Broadway’s long history – whenever Hurricane Irene allows its cast to give another performance.

Stars Christopher Sieber (who plays Billy Flynn) and Charlotte d’Amboise (Roxie Hart) and the company of the hard-to-miss musical revival set in the Windy City in the Roaring Twenties marked the show’s 6,137th performance Friday night. That allowed “Chicago” to tie “A Chorus Line” for the fourth-longest run on Broadway, The Associated Press reported.

Actress Bebe Neuwirth, who portrayed Velma Kelly when the revival of the John Kander/Fred Ebb musical opened in 1996, plunged a big knife into a sheet cake “decorated with a classic ‘Chicago’ image of a sexy murderess” for the occasion at intermission Friday, according to the AP.

But since Irene has closed down Broadway, “Chicago” won’t be able to give its record-breaking show until Monday night.

The three Broadway spectacles with even longer runs were all imported from Britain: “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Cats,” and “Les Miserables.”
