Scarlett Johansson: “Getting Married Was the Right Thing to Do”

The "Avengers" star has no regrets over her short-lived marriage to actor Ryan Reynolds

A year after her marriage to Ryan Reynolds ended, actress Scarlett Johansson admits she has no regrets about their brief, two-year union.

The 27-year-old "Avengers" star tells Cosmopolitan that getting hitched was "the best thing I ever did."

"I'm a big believer that when something feels right, you should do it," she continues. "I'm a big believer in instinct. Getting married was the right thing to do because it was natural. It grew out of a romance and love and a desire to have a future with somebody, and I was very fortunate that I married somebody who turned out to be the person I thought he would be."

However, the nuts and bolts of married life soon proved too difficult for either actor to bear, and the couple split in 2010.

"Relationships are complicated," says Johansson. "Being married is a living, breathing process. I think I was not fully aware of the peaks and the valleys. I wasn't prepared to hunker down and do the work... Both of us were extremely busy. We spent so much time apart. It's very difficult."

Following their separation, Johansson was briefly involved with 51-year-old actor Sean Penn. Reynolds, meanwhile, has most recently been linked to his "Green Lantern" co-star Blake Lively.

Overall, Johansson says, there are still elements of married life that she misses. Specifically, she tells the magazine, she misses "having a partner and a confidant."

Johansson can be seen sporting the signature flame-red hair of her "Avengers" heroine "Black Widow" on the January cover of Cosmopolitan.
