Fans of "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker who died in a fiery crash on Saturday in a Southern California suburb said they were shocked at the news as authorities said speed was a factor in the wreck.
Walker, who was a passenger, died after the crash in Valencia, Calif., Saturday afternoon. He was 40 years old. Former race car driver Roger Rodas, 38, a friend and business associate of Walker, was the driver of the car. He also died, said Jason Dorrnick, an employee at Always Evolving, a custom race car company owned by Rodas.
He has not officially been identified.
Thousands of fans and also co-stars of Walker's gathered Sunday at the spot where he died, leaving candles and flowers at a makeshift memorial.
Tyrese Gibson was visibly shaken at the memorial.
"My heart is hurting so bad," he wrote on his Instagram account. "No one can make me believe this is real..."My heart hurts."
Sandra Caipo, who visited the crash scene, said she thought his death was a hoax.
“It was just unbelievable,” she said. “It’s just shocking.”
Derek Conway visited the scene to pay his respects as a fan.
"Sad to see," Conway said. "Horrible story. You feel for his family and anybody who knows him."
Deputies responded to the wreck about 3:30 p.m. in the 28300 block of Rye Canyon Loop, officials said.
A car engulfed in flames was found and extinguished by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Authorities found two people inside the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT after the fire was put out, officials said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said speed was a factor in the one-car crash, though it will take time to determine how fast the car was going.
Sheriff's deputy Peter Gomez said investigators are working to determine how fast the car was traveling and what caused it to go out of control, including whether the driver was distracted or something in the road prompted him to swerve.
Walker was in Valencia for a fundraiser benefiting victims of Typhoon Haiyan living in the Philippines.
