Sochi Day 12: What to Watch

Women's figure skating and men's hockey lead the day's events

The action intensifies Wednesday in the two headlining events of the Games — men's hockey and women's figure skating. In the Bolshoy Ice Dome, the hockey competition moves into the quarterfinals with the U.S. returning to the ice for the first time since its easy win over Slovakia Sunday.

Meanwhile in the Iceberg Skating Palace, Gracie Gold, Ashley Wagner and Polina Edmunds will perform their short programs in the first of two nights of women's figure skating.

Curling also enters the semifinals, while the women's bobsled competition wraps up. Scroll down for more details on what to watch on the 12th day of competition.

1 a.m. ET: Catch up on Tuesday's highlights with NBC's late night recap of the women's 1000m short track race, followed by women's giant slalom, halfpipe skiing, bobsled and snowboard cross at 2 a.m. ET.

2 a.m. ET: American skier Ted Ligety kicks off the first event of the day — the men's giant slalom, which is Ligety's specialty. He had been considered a favorite for this race earlier in the Games, but has since had a pair of disappointing finishes in the super-G and men's downhill race. Bode Miller is also back in competition, after his emotional bronze medal win in the super-G. Watch the first of two runs live here. The second and final heats kicks off at 5:30 a.m. ET here

3 a.m. ET: Underdog Slovenia, which has fought its way into quarterfinals, plays Sweden in the first of four men's hockey games Wednesday. Watch it here or on the NBC Sports Network.

5 a.m. ET: The curling semifinals open with two women's matchups: Watch Canada-Britain here and Switzerland-Sweden here.

9:30 a.m. ET: The Czech Republic, France, Norway and Russia have the best shot at gold in the biathlon mixed relay, a new Olympic event you can watch live here.

10 a.m. ET: The big headlining event of the day (and possibly the Olympics) is the women's individual figure skating competition, which kicks off with the women's short program. Gracie Gold is the USA's best hope for a gold. Ashley Wagner and Polina Edmunds, who will compete for the first time on Sochi ice, will also perform. The biggest threats heading into the competition are reigning gold medalist Yuna Kim from South Korea, reigning silver medalist Mao Asada from Japan and Russia's 15-year-old prodigy Julia Lipnitskaia.

Meanwhile, Sweden takes on Great Britain here while Canada plays China here in the men's curling semifinals.

11:15 a.m. ET: Lolo Jones and Lauryn Williams wrap it up on the bobsled track with two final runs a piece. Jones and her partner Jazmine Fenlator were in 11th place after yesterday's first two runs, but Williams, a bronze medalist in the event, looks destined for gold. She and Elana Meyers hold the lead heading into the final day of competition, with .23 seconds over the 2010 Olympic champs.

12 p.m. ET: The U.S. men's hockey team is back on ice for the first time since Saturday. The team takes on the Czech Republic. Watch live here or on the USA Network. Meanwhile, the other undefeated team, Canada, takes on Latvia. Watch that game live here or on MSNBC.

If both Canada and the U.S. win, they'll face each other in the semifinals.

3 p.m. ET: NBC has replays of the 5000m speed skating race and the cross-country team sprints.

8 p.m. ET/7C: NBC prime time shows the women's figure skating competition, men's Giant Slalom and women's bobsled final.
