Mel Gibson Makes Surprise Appearance at “Mad Max: Fury Road” Premiere

Original "Mad Max" franchise star Mel Gibson made a surprise appearance on the black carpet for the "Mad Max: Fury Road" Los Angeles premiere Thursday. The 59-year-old actor was all smiles while dressed casually for the event, wearing jeans, boots and a few zip-up jackets over his black shirt.

Gibson, who portrayed the original Max Rockatansky in the 1979 dystopian action film, posed for photos on the carpet with the new Mad Max, Tom Hardy.

Both versions were directed by Australian filmmaker George Miller.

Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult, “Mad Max: Fury Road” smashes into theaters on May 15, 2015.

Co-star Charlize Theron also hit the carpet in a stunning strapless, black and white dress, and posed for cameras alongside beau Sean Penn.

"She's a lot of fun, great sense of humor, but also incredible to watch," Nicholas Hoult recently said of his co-star Theron. "I'm lucky I've done two films with her now and each time, very different characters but to watch her transform and switch it on in takes is remarkable."

"Mad Max: Fury Road" takes place in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and all hope falls to two rebels–Max, a man of action and of few words, and Furiosa (Theron), a woman of action who is looking to make it back to her childhood homeland.

The film hits theaters on May 15.
