‘Game of Thrones' Promotion Makes Union Square Look Like Dragon Crash Site

The sixth season of the show based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy book series is set to premiere April 24 on HBO

It may be the verge of spring as far as the calendar is concerned, but winter is coming to New York City.

That's because a couple of events to promote a DVD release of the latest season of the HBO show "Game of Thrones" are set to make it look like a dragon has laid waste to at least part of the city.

Commuters heading to and from Union Square in Manhattan got the first glimpse Tuesday morning, where it looked like one of Daenerys Targaryen's three dragons crash-landed on the north side of the public space.

Photos posted to social media showed a dirt skid mark where the "dragon" landed, along with broken concrete tiles, smashed light poles and battered trash cans. A dragon's claw mark is also visible.

"It looks like my Dragons have landed in New York City," said a promotional Twitter account purporting to be Targaryen.

New Yorkers also stopped to look at the display, which included posters for the show and police barricades.

"Went past the Game of Thrones thing in Union Square. It's cute, they made it look like a dragon crash landed," said Instagram user @nichblue.

According to DNAinfo, the display will be up all day Tuesday ahead of a second event at Herald Square, where promoters will project a 20-minute, 3-D animated short feature.

A spokeswoman for HBO said that at some point during the screening, set to begin at 7:30 p.m., a projection of a dragon will soar over the city skyline.

The next season of the show, based on a fantasy book series by New Jersey-born author George R.R. Martin, is set to premiere on April 24.
