Despite her son being charged with three counts of first-degree murder in connection to the deaths of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew, William Balfour’s mother insists the police have the wrong man.

The Cook County State Attorney’s Office confirmed to Access Hollywood that Balfour, who was arrested for the murders of Hudson’s relatives on Monday, was charged with the murder counts and one count of home invasion on Tuesday.

But while Chicago police believe they have the right man in custody, Balfour’s mother claims her son is innocent.

In an interview with WMAQ in Chicago on Monday following Balfour’s arrest, his mother, Michelle, claimed the police department conducted a “botched” investigation.

“They’re trying to say my son was in the area that time of the morning – no, he was not!” Michelle Balfour insisted.

She went on to question the tactics used by police during their investigation.

“They tested him for gun residue, nothing was found. [They] made my son take his hair down – no gun powder, no blood was splattered, none on his shoes,” Michelle Balfour continued. “They didn’t ask anybody besides my son to take a lie detector test – you’re not going to put this on my child!”

Furthermore, Michelle Balfour claims her son’s girlfriend may have played a role in landing William behind bars.

“Under no circumstances did my son do this,” Michelle Balfour said, according to CBS2 in Chicago. “They brought him from Stateville [Correctional Center] two days before it was time for him to be released. [His girlfriend] Shonta Cathey has a pending drug case with the Chicago Police Department. She made a deal with the state’s attorney in order to have my son brought back up here to be convicted on a gun charge or this murder.”

William Balfour, 27, has been in police custody since October 24, the same day the bodies of Donerson and Jason Hudson were discovered in the family home.

The body of King was discovered two days later.

Police took Balfour, who had been previously identified as a “person of interest” in the case, into custody on October 24 for a parole violation.
