Lindsay Lohan opened up this week about substance abuse and family discord, saying she "hit rock bottom" and tried to "mask her problems" with booze and cocaine but has since moved on to a better lifestyle.

Lohan, whose personal ups and downs have been chronicled in the tabloids since she rocketed to stardom as a teenager, spent the better part of her young adult life dealing with feuding parents Dina and Michael Lohan.

The "Mean Girls" actress told the UK's The Sun that when her father Michael started spilling to the press about her, she spiraled out of control -- and "hit rock bottom."

"When my father was going public, that's when I hit rock bottom. I abused substances way too much and it wasn't the answer to my problems," Lohan told the Sun.

"I've made some dreadful mistakes but learned from them -- that has probably saved my life," Lohan said.

The star also confessed that she had been to rehab three times, the first after she checked herself in because she had "taken Ambien," then "fallen asleep" while running a bath, only waking when the water overflowed.

"I was terrified, so I put myself in," Lohan said. "I was doing pop and making films. I was young and thought I could go out, have fun, then go on set and record. I ran myself down and I lost track of who I was."

She was first caught with cocaine in 2007 after a car crash, a drug the starlet said she only became aware of "because of [her] dad."

"I was terrified of it. But I tried it because I was stubborn, stupid, and wanted to see what it was like," Lohan said.

The 2007 arrest,  a "stupid and childish" incident that she said was spurred by paparazzi whose "flashes were going off into the window," saw Lohan charged with driving under the influence and cocaine use after police searched her purse and found the drug.

But Lohan said she has turned a corner in her life -- and that her experiences with substances have only made her stronger.

"I've now learned my boundaries and I've been very good with cleaning house with people who I know didn't have my best intentions at heart," said Lohan, who was last in the public eye during her breakup with DJ Samantha Ronson.

"Partying so hard simply isn't worth it. Life is worth living and there is so much to do and experience, it's wonderful," she said.
