You may have noticed Lady Gaga's wardrobe has taken on the flavor meat.

First, there was the raw meat bikini she wore on the cover of a Japanese edition of Vogue. Then, at the MTV Video Music Awards, she sported a bacon-print dress. Ellen DeGeneres was quick to spot the dead animal tissue theme, and asked Ms. Gaga about  it.

"I get most of your outfits," DeGeneres said. But meat?

"It's certainly no disrespect to anyone that's vegan or vegetarian," Gaga replied. "As you know I'm the most judgment-free human being on the Earth. It has many interpretations, but for me this evening it's [saying] if we don't stand up for what we believe in, if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones."

Then, as if she just grasped the absurdity of what she'd just said, Gaga offered up a slightly more plausible explanation. It's meant to show she's "not a piece of meat."

DeGeneres, a known vegan, offered Gaga with a bikini and skirt made of vegetables.

Gaga wore the "meat dress," by Franc Fernandez, while accepting the award earlier in the evening for video of the year. When Cher presented the trophy to her, Gaga quipped, "I never thought I'd be asking Cher to hold my meat purse."

PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk also called out Gaga, following the awards ceremony.

"Wearing a dress made out cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people who are upset by butchery than who are impressed by it," Newkirk said, Usmagazine.com reported. "Meat is the decomposing flesh of a tormented animal who didn't want to die, and after a few hours under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh it is and likely be crawling in maggots -- not too attractive, really."
