The actor best known for playing Dr. No in the first James Bond film has died in New York at age 91.

Joseph Wiseman, who had parts in "Detective Story" in 1951 and "The Unforgiven" in 1960 before landing his signature role as the sinister scientist and title character opposite Sean Connery in 1962, was proudest of his stage work.

"Stage acting was what he wanted to be remembered for," Wiseman's daughter told the Los Angeles Times.

After his movie role, Wiseman appeared on such television shows as "The Twilight Zone," "The Streets of San Francisco" and "Law & Order."
