Chris Martin may not rule the world, but his band Coldplay certainly ruled the 2008 charts.

The British four piece had the most downloaded album – “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” — of the year on iTunes. The band’s chart victory was no doubt helped by the album’s title track, “Viva La Vida (When I Ruled The World),” which was used in an iTunes ad to promote the album’s release in June.

Surfy pop crooner Jack Johnson’s album, “Sleep Through The Static,” was the second most downloaded album followed by the “Juno (Music from the Motion Picture)” soundtrack.

Lil’ Wayne had the highest urban entry on the list taking fourth with his “Tha Carter III,” which was followed closely by Sara Bareilles’ “Little Voice.”

The soundtrack to “Once” took sixth, while Jason Mraz’s “We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things,” managed seventh.

One Republic’s “Dreaming Out Loud,” found itself at eighth, while the soundtrack to “Across the Universe” was ninth.

Leona Lewis, who had her big breakout hit “Bleeding Love,” penned by One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder, took the tenth spot, as fans downloaded her debut album, “Spirit,” in droves.

Flo Rida’s “Low,” which features T-Pain took third, while Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” nabbed fourth.

Rihanna’s “Disturbia” was the fifth most downloaded single.

Lil’ Wayne & Static Major’s “Lollipop” took sixth, Jordin Sparks’ “No Air” was seventh, Natasha Bedingfield’s “Pocketful of Sunshine” was eighth, Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song,” took ninth and “Don’t Stop the Music,” by Rihanna rounded out the top ten.
