Souper Bowl of Caring 2012

Help Tackle Hunger

Join NBC 5 in the fight against hunger and donate non-perishable food items for the Souper Bowl of Caring, the largest food drive benefiting the North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Starting Friday, Jan. 13 through Sunday, Feb. 5, stop by any Tom Thumb, Albertson’s, Kroger or Market Street and purchase a pre-packaged food bag to donate or make a cash donation at one of 217 participating grocery stores.

The goal is to collect one million pounds of food to benefit these two organizations that collect food for nearly 550 relief agencies throughout the North Texas region.

The 2012 Souper Bowl of Caring kicked off Friday morning in front of a packed and pumped up crowd on the campus of Coppell High School, because the students raised more than 16,000 food items for the cause last year - the largest collection of any school in the nation.

For the third consecutive year, NBC 5, Telemundo 39, Albertson’s, Market Street, The Kroger Company and Tom Thumb Food and Pharmacy are teaming up with The Dallas Morning News, Star-Telegram, KLTY, other local media outlets as well as the Dallas Cowboys to fight a cause that is important to all of us -- hunger.

The campaign is an effort to tackle hunger in North Texas, where statistically 1 in 4 children lives in poverty. On any given day, 1.2 million people in North Central Texas will go without food. The Souper Bowl of Caring is a nationwide, grassroots movement utilizing the Big Game weekend to mobilize communities, especially youth, to fight hunger and poverty in local communities.

In addition to in-store food drives, the Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive has reached out to 300 local churches and more than 150 public and private schools to host their own food drives and to volunteer to help collect donations during the campaign.

So stop by any Tom Thumb, Albertson’s, Kroger or Market Street and donate non-perishable food items or make a cash donation Friday, Jan. 13 through Sunday, Feb. 5.
