Spanning the Globe

The Rangers continue to look towards the future and make a mark in the world of international scouting.

They are dipping into the international pool and signed 16-year old Dominican prospect Nomar Mazara to a record bonus of more than $5 million.

Mazara could be a gem for the Rangers. He is a 6-foot-5-inch outfielder who hits for power from the left side of the plate. You won’t see him in the majors anytime soon, but the Rangers are positioning themselves to have an heir apparent to their current crop of All-Star outfielders.

Rangers’ general manager Jon Daniels hasn’t talked too much about the Mazara deal, saying it was policy to refrain from commenting until deals are finalized and players have passed medical exams.

There are also several reports that the Rangers are close to signing Dominican pitcher Pedro Payano for $500,000 to $600,000 and Dominican outfielder Ronald Guzman for about $3.5 million. The 6-foot-4-inch, 195-pound Guzman earns high marks from scouts for his makeup and overall feel for the game.

If the Rangers are trying to make a splash in the international free agent market, they are turning some heads with the money being spent to do so.
